Gross Margin

I am trying to go indepth into the call center working and I will appreciate if anyone has any real insight into the gross margin.
Firstly, is gross margin a universal term? By that Imean, if I tell a 3rd party about gross margin or include this term in my resume, will the other person know what I am talking about?

We calculate the gross margin on a daily basis by (Revenue generated - Expenses).

What would be the factors by which we can increase the gross margin?

Thanks.
