history of call centers

we are doing a research about the employment contribution of call centers. could you please give us a brief history of how call centers evolved.we need this as a background of our study. thank you.

My guess - though I think it is a very likely one - is that the very first call centers consisted of the operators who placed the calls for the early phone companies.
