Credit Card processing on inbound order entry
I am trying to gather data on the use of electronic credit card processing by inbound call centers. Is it typical that the call center operator would process the card in real time when filling an order for a caller? If so, what type of system is typically used to process the card?

I've seen it done both ways - sometimes a batch file is performed at the end of the day, and sometimes it's done real-time.
Batch runs at the end of the day are probably best for a new or smaller business. The product can't be shipped or otherwise delivered until the CC transaction is approved, and there is always a certain percentage of transactions that will be declined. The advantage of real-time transactions is that there are a lot of different types of "declined" transactions. A big percentage of "declined" transactions just mean that the customer's issuing bank wants to do a security check. They'll ask them a few questions and the transaction will be approved. I guess it depends on whether the extra time involved in calling the CC company is worth it for your business. If you're doing a cash advance for $90,000 with a $7,000 dollar service charge - it's worth it. If you're having a "blow out sale" on Chia Pets - maybe not . . . ;-) |
